Trend of declining birthrates will be 'very difficult to reverse'

Emeritus Professor William Reville says the decline in birthrates worldwide is something which scientists are “only beginning to understand” now.

“The extent of the decline in population is pretty much jaw dropping and its going to start in 2064 and the decline will continue up beyond 2100, and we know when trends like this set in it’s very, very difficult to reverse them,” he told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.

Professor Reville said the implications of declining birthrates should be pondered more and a higher population is “actually not that bad for the environment”.

“There’s very strong evidence that large numbers in population are a good thing, they do press on the environment but humans are clever animals and are able to come up with technological solutions to ameliorate or to sort out these matters.”
